The cricket world is buzzing after South Africa’s thrilling victory against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s. Led by Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram’s remarkable performances, the Proteas chased down 282 runs in the fourth innings to clinch the title by five wickets, ending a 27-year wait for an ICC trophy.

Former Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar congratulated South Africa on their impressive win against a formidable Australian lineup. Markram’s commanding 136 and Bavuma’s gritty 66 forged a crucial 147-run partnership that sealed the historic victory.

“Test cricket continues to weave its magic. In a final where every session had its own story, @ProteasMenCSA found calm in the storm. Markram’s composure and Bavuma’s grit under pressure stood tall in the fourth innings,” Tendulkar tweeted. He further hailed the partnership as “a century that will be remembered, a partnership that turned hope into history.”

Yuvraj Singh, former India all-rounder, also applauded the South African team, especially bowlers Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Marco Jansen, for their relentless efforts throughout the match. Rabada took nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings, playing a pivotal role in the Proteas’ success.

Yuvraj praised South Africa’s resilience and acknowledged Australia’s long-standing dominance in ICC events, gently reminding the Aussies, “It’s okay to let go of one trophy.” He wrote, “The class of 2025 ends a 27-year wait and lifts the ICC World Test Championship Trophy in style! Huge congrats to the @ProteasMenCSA on a historic win at Lord’s. I’ve always believed there’s no greater measure of resilience and character than Test cricket and South Africa rose to the occasion! #AidenMarkram’s century was pure class.”

This defeat marks Australia’s first loss in an ICC final since 2010, when they were beaten by England in the T20 World Cup final. The moment Kyle Verreynne struck the winning runs, jubilant celebrations erupted in the South African dressing room. Temba Bavuma was visibly emotional, while spinner Keshav Maharaj broke down during a post-match interview with Graeme Smith.

South Africa’s memorable win not only ends a decades-long trophy drought but also reaffirms their place among cricket’s elite on the world stage.
